Education Minister Hekia Parata has welcomed today's dawn opening of a new purpose-built building for South Auckland partnership school Te Kura Māori o Waatea.

Since opening last year the primary school has operated from meeting houses elsewhere on Ngā Whare Waatea Marae.

A new early childhood centre was also opened on the marae.

Ms Parata says it's a tribute to the vision and hard work of principal Tania Rangiheuea and her team.

"Of course it's one of our partnership schools, kura hourua, which allows for those who are leading their kura to decide exactly how they want to teach, what options are available and it gives parents another choice and I think Te Kura Māori o Waatea, investing as it has in its own purpose-built learning environment is showing how absolutely committed it is to our youngest learners," she says.
