Waatea Junior School

Advancing educational outcomes for Māori

The Waatea Junior School currently caters for students from Years 1 to 7. In 2019, this will be extended to include Year 8 students. There are 100 enrolled students and most are Māori.

Based at Nga Whare Waatea Marae, the school's vision is to foster in students and whanau a love of learning through a culturally enriched, safe and whanau centric learning environment.

Waatea Junior School is an English-medium, bilingual school aligned to the New Zealand Curriculum (NZC) and the strength of Kaupapa Māori.

Whenua | Our relationship with the land

Ngā Whare Waatea has occupied the land of 31 Calthorp Close, Mangere since the early 1980's. It serves as a community hub for the wider South Auckland community.

A critical component to the success of MUMA's education strategy to date has been the availability of the marae facilities. The availability of three Wharenui enabled us to open the temporary Early Childhood Centre and two temporary school classrooms in February 2015. The school has continued to make use of the marae facilities. These include three wharenui with attached ablutions. These facilities will remain available to the school on a as-required basis.
